An Event Not To Be Missed! Monday, July
19, 2010
Most
Americans, when they see battle lines being
drawn in the Middle East, think Arab vs.
Israeli.
But in reality, the internal Palestinian civil
war between the Hamas and Fatah factions may in
fact be a much bigger obstacle to peace and
stability in the region.
So
says Jonathan
Schanzer, counter terrorism expert, former US
Treasury "Follow the Money" analyst,
and best selling author. Presently,
he is the Director of Policy at the Jewish
Policy Center, a Washington, DC -based think
tank.
Schanzer will be speaking
in Aspen on Monday, July
19, 5 pm at The Little Nell.
Schanzer recently
published “Hamas vs.
Fatah: The Struggle for Palestine,” that
he describes as follows:
“The Palestinians are usually described as one
united people with one goal: statehood. My book
questions this.
In fact,
throughout the book, which tracks the histories
of both Hamas and Fatah, it becomes increasingly
clear that the Palestinians actually lack a
coherent vision for their future. The Hamas
faction seeks an Islamist polity.
The Fatah
faction seeks a more secular one. Opposition to
Israel is perhaps the only issue upon which they
truly agree. Yet, Fatah has elected to engage
the Israelis (for now), while Hamas is steadfast
in its refusal."
Schanzer
has published widely in the national press and
has appeared with frequency on television
networks ranging from Fox News and al-Jazeerah.
He has traveled widely in Israel, Iraq, Yemen,
Egypt, Morocco, Kuwait, Qatar, Turkey, Jordan
and the Palestinian Territories. He speaks
Arabic and Hebrew.
Admission
to this event is $50 per person with a Minimum
Family Gift of $500 to the 2010 UJA Aspen Valley
Annual Campaign.
Your gift at any time throughout the year meets
the requirements for Both Winter
and Summer Campaign Events.

From
JAFI - Jewish Agency for Israel
June
28, 2010 / 16 Tammuz 5770
Leading
Scholar on Anti-Semitism: "Every Jew Who
Cares Must Take Part in this Important
Struggle."
A leading
scholar on the history of anti-Semitism gave a
sobering talk on the rise of anti-Semitism and
anti-Israel sentiment across the globe at the
World Zionist Congress in Jerusalem.
Robert
Wistrich, a Professor of European and Jewish
history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
and the head of the University's Vidal Sassoon
International Center for the Study of
Antisemitism, spoke on Wednesday, June 16, 2010.
Wistrich
is the author of 25 books, most recently, A
Lethal Obsession: Antisemitism - From Antiquity
to the Global Jihad.
"Anti-Semitism
and hostility and antagonism to Israel have long
existed," said Wistrich, but a "globalized,
highly mobile, media-tized world," has
amplified this phenomenon.
The
internet in particular, despite its potential,
also "provides a paradise for bigots"
and is the source of an "endless
mushrooming of websites spewing anti-Israel and
anti-Semitic propaganda and a platform to
recruit followers," he said.
Beyond that,
ideas that are considered no longer acceptable
in the Western world, such as Holocaust denial
and anti-Semitic rhetoric like the Protocols of
the Elders of Zion are embraced by the Arab
world en masse as well as within the academic
Arab elite, according to Wistrich.
Radical
Islam, with its accompanying anti-Semitism and
anti-Israel feelings, is a real danger for
Jewish communities around the world since the
Muslim population is growing exponentially.
"We as the Jewish people and Israel cannot
fight and win this battle alone," he said.
"Jews
have to take responsibility have to be
proactive. Gentiles and the silent majority have
to find allies," said Wistrich.
