Joan
Wolfberg as Golda Meir
The Annual Summer LOJ Luncheon
was held Monday, July
21 at Noon, Joan Wolfberg, in her incredible
one-woman
performance as Golda Meir, was the guest speaker.
****************************
The
Annual Summer Luncheon in July for Aspen Valley and Out-of Town Lions
and
Aspen Valley Pomegranates was
a unique experience for everyone who attended.
Over 30 women came together at Judith Steinberg's Aspen home, (Andrea
Gordon, who hosted the event, had a family emergency and had to leave
town): they all quickly understood what a very special event was
unfolding.
After a delicious meal and the easy comaraderie of Lions from Aspen and
the dozen Lions from out of town, history came alive.
Golda Meir was there - in spirit, in speech, in character, in charisma.
Yes, underneath the clothing and theatrical makeup and wig was
professional actress Joan Wolfberg. But that was soon forgotten. She was
Golda for all to see and hear.
Golda laughed, cried, told her life story, and mused about what might have
been. She was there during the pogrums of Eastern Europe, then transported
to the United States, and finally made Aliyah to the yet unofficial Jewish
homeland -Israel.
She knew Ben Gurion. She worked till her fingers bled on the kibbutz in
the dry dessert that was to become fertile farmland. She married, had
children, but all the while she knew deep down that her destiny was to
help make Israel the place all Jews could consider their home.
The photos Golda showed were amazing. What a beautiful young woman she
was. What a proud and determined diplomat she was. The anecdotes were
hilarious - there was the time Henry Kissinger said to her that he was a
diplomat first, an American second, and a Jew third.
She smiled and said, "That's all right: We read right to left
anyway."
One of the democratic world's first head of state, Golda came to the
United States during the darkest times for the young Jewish nation, but
left with a financial foundation that would help the Israelis best the
Arabs who wished Israel destroyed.
The legacy that Golda left for all people was that determination, pride,
and commitment are the hallmarks of the Jewish tradition and the Jewish
future.

Lion of Judah
and Lion of Judah Endowment
 |
Long a symbol of strength and majesty in the Jewish
world and in the world at large, the Lion of
Judah is a dramatic reminder that each woman can make a significant difference in the
lives, vitality, and continuity of her family and her people.
Being a Lion of Judah,
and wearing a Lion of Judah
pin, gives us a very special way to connect with the
greater Jewish community. You proudly show you recognize the meaning of tzedakah.
Together, through caring and passion, women who wear the Lion
of Judah pin are able to transform the
concept of Tikum Olam from an abstract dream to a concrete reality.
Lion of Judah
Endowments provide an opportunity to fulfill long term and future commitments to
Jewish survival and the quality of Jewish life. Or L'Atid (Light unto
the
Future) on the Lion of Judah
pin is a symbol of the eternal responsiveness of Jewish women. Lion of Judah members
pledge a minimum of $5000 as a lifetime commitment.

the primacy of the annual campaign; |
 | Demonstrate effective and superior
leadership skills in federations and the community-at-large to
inspire, motivate, teach and train other leaders; |
 | Contribute to the strength of the Jewish
People through substantive education and comprehensive outreach; |
 | Strengthen Israeli and overseas
partnerships among women through programs and projects, and develop
personal relationships with Jewish women around the world; |
 | Heighten political awareness, advocate for
the rights of women and monitor evolving issues of concern to
contemporary Jewish women; |
 | Affirm Jewish identity and spirituality,
which bind women to the tradition of Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah. |

ABOUT THE ILOJC
What are the dates of this year’s ILOJC?
The 2008 ILOJC will take place in Tel Aviv from November 12-16. It
will begin in the early evening of Wednesday November 12th and will go
through a phenomenal night of celebration Saturday night November 15th. Since
the GA will begin on Sunday afternoon November 16th in Jerusalem, a
complimentary shuttle transfer will be offered for those participants
going on to attend the GA.
What are the hotels for this year’s ILOJC?
The hotels are the David InterContinental and the Hilton in Tel Aviv.
The only way to get a hotel room for the ILOJC is by registering
on-line. A room may not be reserved by anyone other than the registrant.
Click
here for a downloadable map of Tel Aviv.
How can I find out about programming scheduled for the ILOJC?
Click
here to see the most up-to-date program details for the ILOJC. Many
aspects of the program are not yet finalized, so please check back
periodically to check for programming updates .
Can my spouse/partner/female adult relative join me at the ILOJC?
Spouses are invited to register for a concurrent track that will be
intersecting with our program in the evenings. Registration for spouses
is accomplished in the same way on-line, and will have the same pricing
structure.
• Adult daughters, daughters-in-law, nieces and granddaughters are
invited to register along with a Lion of Judah attending the conference
and will be included in the community caucuses, and expected to make
their gifts at that time. Registration is accomplished the same way
on-line.
REGISTRATION
How do I register?
Registration will open online in May. The online registration form will
enable individuals to register for any or all of the November programs
in Israel in one visit to the website .
If I am attending the ILOJC, a community mission or JAFI
meetings, do I need to fill out separate registration forms for each
event?
You may register online for all of the events/conferences at
the same time in the same online session.
I’d like to travel to the GA as part of a local group. How do
I know if there’s one being formed in my area?
Please contact your local federation to see if they are arranging to
travel as a group. They may also be organizing an Israel mission in
conjunction with their GA participation.
NOTE: For ILOJC participants who also wish to attend
the GA, there is no registration fee for the GA! That cost is covered by
your registration fee for the ILOJC. However, you must indicate on your
registration form for the ILOJC that you will also be attending the GA!
Hotel accommodations for the GA are assigned by community and have
nothing to do with ILOJC arrangements.
I'm traveling independently, not as part of a group or mission.
Do I register for the event and hotel first, or make flight arrangements
first?
You can register for the event and reserve a hotel room before you have
flights. Once you book your flights, please make sure that they are
consistent with your hotel check-in and check-out dates. Please add
your flight details to your registration as soon as you have made those
arrangements.
What are the registration fees for the ILOJC?
Lions = $600
Lion Kings (Spouses/Significant Others) = $600
Next Gen (Female Relative over 21 years of age ) = $600
• Pricing for the conference, exclusive of airfare, is as follows. The
conference registration fee is $600. The price for the ILOJC hotel rooms
is $500 for the four nights of the event. This cost is per person for
double occupancy. If you would prefer your own room, there is a $400
single-supplement fee, so the total hotel room cost would be $900. The
registration and hotel costs mentioned here will cover all program
costs, buses, transfers, food and beverage, etc. This does NOT
include airfare.
*All participants of both the International Lion of Judah Conference and
the GA, have their GA registration fee covered by the registration fee
for the Lion Conference, but they need to register for the GA and to
reserve/pay spearately for hotel rooms for the GA .
What if I need to modify my registration to change my arrival or
departure details or other information?
Upon registration, you will receive a confirmation number. You
can modify your registration using your confirmation number to
access your record .
What is the ILOJC cancellation policy?
Prior to July 1, 2008, you may cancel without any penalty. Cancellations
received after July 1 will incur a $150 cancellation fee, and after
November 1 there is a $300 cancellation fee. Please note that missions
and the GA also have cancellation fees. For mission cancellation fee
details, please contact your mission coordinator at your local
federation. For GA cancellation details, please check that conference
FAQ.
When is it too late to register for the ILOJC?
Space is limited for the ILOJC so please note that the registration is
on a first come first serve basis.
Why do I need to supply passport information on the registration
form?
This is needed for security purposes. Additionally, by Israeli
law, hotels must have your passport information in order to reserve a
room.
How do I register for a hotel?
The online ILOJC reservation form will ask if you require a
hotel room with any special arrangements. You will be notified
with regard to your hotel assignment approximately 30 days prior to the
ILOJC.
How much will my hotel room cost?
The price for the ILOJC rooms is $500 for the 4 nights. If a
participant wants her own room, there is a $400
single-supplement, so the total would be $900. If a
participant wants a room before or after the conference dates,
they will so indicate on the form online and the land agent will
contact participants who have made this request on the registration
form online.
What if I plan to share a room? Do we both have to reserve a
room?
If you wish to reserve a hotel room for the ILOJC, you must register
separately for that room, even if you are sharing with another person.
You will be asked to name your roommate, and each person should indicate
the name of the roommate at the time of registration.* Each
registrant will be charged $500 for the 4 nights of the conference,
unless you request a single room, in which case an additional $400 will
be charged for the Single Supplement. The total cost for a single
room for the conference, without a roommate, is $900.
*Please note that if one roommate cancels, the remaining person will be
charged for a single-person room.
I’d like to reserve a suite at one of the ILOJC hotels. How
can I do this?
Because room availabilities are limited, we recommend that you go ahead
and register for a room while you complete your registration form, and
indicate in the special request box on the form that you would like a
suite. Your request will be forwarded to our agent, who will contact you
about this.
What should I do if my community’s pre-ILOJC mission isn’t
listed on the registration form?
Please contact your local federation. Click
here for our Federation Finder tool.
I gave my federation a deposit for the pre-ILOJC mission I will
be going on. Do I need to give another
deposit, as requested on the registration form?
Yes; the deposit is required to complete registration.
TRAVEL
What's the weather usually like in Tel Aviv in
November?
The weather in Tel Aviv during the month of November is mild.
Temperatures range from 60-75°F.
How should I dress for the ILOJC?
Dress for the ILOJC is casual and comfortable, especially on trip day
(Thursday). You may wish to wear
some nicer outfits (but still casual) for the evening programs and for
Shabbat. Given the autumn
weather, we recommend that you bring a jacket and/or raincoat. The
key is to wear what makes you
happy & comfortable!
Will food provided by the ILOJC be Kosher?
Any meals provided by UJC at the ILOJC will be Kosher.
What provisions are made for those with disabilities?
Please indicate the disability and special needs in the box provided on
the registration form and we
will be happy to address your needs .
How do I book my flight?
Gil Travel is available to handle your travel needs. For GA and ILOJC
travel, call their Philadelphia office
at 1-800-880-1369; for missions, call their New York office at
1-212-284-6669. You may, of course, use
any travel agent of your choosing.
Do I need a special visa? Are there any special passport
regulations?
A valid passport is required for all U.S. participants. Please note that
your passport must be valid for
at least six months after your departure date. There is no visa
requirement for U.S. citizens traveling
to Israel. Other nationals should contact the appropriate
consulate to find out about their regulations.
No inoculations are required at present for travel to Israel, but
please check with local public health
authorities for up-to-date information.
Can I use U.S. dollars during my trip, or will I need to get
Israeli currency?
The constantly changing exchange rates due to the strong Shekel
and weaker U.S. Dollar have
forced some businesses to post prices only in Israeli Shekels. We
suggest that you use your credit
cards for purchases or when going out to dinner, and use Israeli
currency for taxis, etc. There are ATM's
throughout Israel where you can withdraw Israeli Shekels from your
account at a favorable exchange rate.
What if I wish to extend my stay at the hotel past the end of
the ILOJC?
When you click the box on the form for hotel extensions and adjustments,
and/or enter any
modifications in the box online, the information will go to the
appropriate agent who will then
contact you within 72 hours.
How will I get to and from Ben Gurion Airport?
Airport transfers will be provided for ILOJC participants as is
possible; we will have buses shuttling
to the hotels in Tel Aviv from Ben Gurion airport for most of the
flights arriving in anticipation for
the ILOJC. As soon as we receive all the required information from
registrants, we will be able to
arrange transfers based on the flights taken. You will be informed
ahead of time if your flight will
be met at the airport. Otherwise, transfers from and to the
airport are available by taxi or shuttle.
If I am attending the International Lion of Judah Conference and
the GA, how do I get from
my Tel Aviv hotel to my Jerusalem hotel?
UJC will provide transfers from ILOJC hotels in Tel Aviv to GA hotels in
Jerusalem on November
16 for those registered for both conferences.
