Coming Up
-
Lion of Judah Summer Luncheon
|
Wednesday,
August 4, Noon at the Aspen home of Dorothy and Hal Thau
|

Meet Sophie
Ambrose |
| Imagine
being a young girl, growing up in the Ozark Mountains in
Arkansas. Your world is small so you only know and understand
what's around you.
Sophie
Ambrose lived where there was no
electricity, running water, or Jewish people. Her mother had run
far away from the Judaism with which she was disenchanted when
she met her father on the remnants of a commune.
She was raised hardly knowing she was Jewish, much less knowing
what being Jewish meant. In college, during a world religions
class in college, Sophie learned that having a Jewish
grandmother meant that she too was Jewish.
Then, during a simple
sinternet search she completed while trying to find a way to learn
more about Judaism, she found out about birthright Israel.
She went on the trip not sure if Judaism meant anything to her.
She came back as a proud Jew ready to learn what that meant and
how to integrate Judaism within her life.
You will hear her
remarkable story at the Lion of Judah Annual Summer Luncheon on Wednesday,
August 4 at Noon at the lovely home of Dorothy and Hal
Thau.
Sophie explains that she
now speaks to Jewish groups around North America:
"To
thank the Jewish community for changing her life and to help
others understand the importance of continuing to give so that
other young adults have the opportunity to go through the
transformation that she experienced due to birthright
Israel."
Sophie recently received
her PhD. She currently lives in Omaha, Nebraska where she is a
postdoctoral fellow, researching how children with hearing loss
develop early communication skills.
Aspen Valley Lions and the
Pomegranate Division cost is $35 per person. Out of town
Lions may attend for $250.

Lions
Select Special Project
Aspen
Valley Lions selected as a special project "Youth Futures" as
presented at the Lion Winter Luncheon by Richie Pearlstone, Chair of the
Board of Governors of Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI)
Under
the Youth Futures umbrella, the Lions will be sponsoring one Trustee,
a socially motivated local resident who coordinates
between the youth, the community resources, the education system, and the family.
The Trustee also acts as a mentor and advocate for the
child, ensuring that his/her environment is as positive and supportive
as possible. Trustees undergo special
training so that they will be able to perform their duties and handle
the responsibility of attending to a group of 10-20
children at-risk.
The total cost the Lions are providing for one trustee for one year is
$26,700.
As Melinda
Goldrich, Lion Chair explained," This is a new concept that we
implemented: to allocate a specific amount of the total gifts (on an
annual basis) to a particular project.
This project will
now go to the UJA Aspen Valley Allocation Committee of the Board for
review and then voted on by the full Board of Directors at the June 22
meeting.

Message
from Melinda Goldrich,
Lion of Judah Chair |

|
Spring is finally here.
Aspen is so beautiful when the grass is so green and the trees and
flowers are budding.
Summer, of course,
means the Music Festival, Aspen Institute Activities, Aspen Theater
and so much more - including the
Annual Lion of Judah Summer Luncheon.
We hope you can
come on Wednesday, August 4. The
incredible and moving story one woman journey from being unaware of
being Jewish to speaking all over North America about Birthright
Israel and the Jewish Federations of North America.
Aspen Lions, out-of-town Lions and members of our growing
Pomegranate Division will be getting together in the beautiful Aspen
home of Dorothy and Hal Thau.
We have taken a important step,
as you will read below, in reaching out to specific Jews in need. We
welcome your input on this an other projects.
Exciting things are happening
in Aspen, please invite any of your friends and family who are interested
in learning more about what the Lions accomplish through their
strong commitment to Tzedakah.
Also, please check out
the other UJA activates going on this Summer. As we say, "Spend
Your Summer with UJA in Aspen."

Long a symbol of strength and majesty in the Jewish
world
and in the world at large, the Lion of
Judah is a dramatic reminder that each woman can make a significant difference in the
lives, vitality, and continuity of her family and her people.
Being a Lion of Judah,
and wearing a Lion of Judah
pin, gives us a very special way to connect with the greater Jewish
community. You proudly show you recognize the meaning of Tzedakah.
Together, through caring and passion, women who wear the Lion
of Judah pin are able to transform the
concept of Tikum Olam from an abstract dream to a concrete
reality.
Lion of Judah
Endowments provide an opportunity to fulfill long term and future commitments to
Jewish survival and the quality of Jewish life. Or L'Atid (Light unto
the
Future) on the Lion of Judah
pin is a symbol of the eternal responsiveness of Jewish women. Lion
of Judah members pledge a minimum of $5000 as a lifetime commitment.
